'Hello I'm Michelle Eyre, and I wanted to talk to you today about getting to Christmas feeling full of energy and greater sense of fulfilment. And I wonder if it's possible. My inspiration for this is because last year I got to Christmas absolutely frazzled.
Yes, I loved seeing my family and I enjoyed the presents and all those things. But really and truly I don't think I got what matters most out of Christmas. I want to revisit the ancient truths and the ancient pathways, and see if you will join me in having a better Christmas this year.
I take my inspiration from the journey of the Magi. They were the wise people who travelled for two years actually, following the star and they didn't know really where that star was going to lead them, or indeed, really what was going to be at the end of it.
Some sort of King they were looking for at the end of it, some baby, but they didn't really know what that was about. And I think that most of the time we journey through Christmas not really knowing what it's about.
This year, I'm determined to do things differently. I'd like to travel a bit lighter towards Christmas, so that there's room for the things that matter and I can let go of the things that don't matter.
The sort of things that I'm thinking about are things like not giving and receiving quite so many presents. I'm no kill-joy, believe me, I love to receive presents, but when I suggested to the family,
'Why don't we do secret Santa for the adults and just have one present each and just really enjoy that?'
And the strange thing was (I thought they'd all really mind), but the strange thing was everybody said,
'Oh yes, that'd be much better.'
It was a huge relief, because of course when you give, then people feel that they have to give and then that's why you end up with things you don't really want, and they don't really want. Simplifying things makes things much better for everybody.
And I think, that for me, the most important thing to simplify is to make sure that I've got some time out to be alone with God. That's not a self-indulgent thing, I'm actually putting myself right with God, by spending time, by listening, praying.
Then I'm more focused on what really matters. More able to be who I really am and not try and be who perhaps it says I should be in a magazine, or some image, of somebody else, I don't know.
If I truly am being myself then I'm more open to other people and to live a fulfilled Christmas.
So, time out with God is the first thing that I'm going to prioritise.
If you'd like to join me, it's coming soon, not there just yet probably. (It depends when you are listening to this), but at the moment it's coming soon. We'll be giving three audio prayer times, they're brand new.
They are the best ones we've done yet, so I'm really excited about them, to offer them to you. And they provide a scaffolding for your prayer times and it also means that you'll be praying with a community of possibly thousands of people, certainly over 33,000 people have taken part in Discovering Prayer to date.
Come and join us. If you'd like to try out the free audio prayer times. It's as simple as just your name and your email address.
So sign up and visit the Facebook page, because we're going to have sharing on the Facebook page. If you want to share tips of how you've simplified Christmas, then we can all learn from each other. I hope you'll come with me and we'll follow the star, as it were, together and we'll travel a little lighter this Christmas for a more fulfilling and more focused time.
